Two Places In Two Days

In my dreams, I envision a place. Staying 380 miles away from Los Angeles, we could not have missed it by any chance. Then any travel freak will tell you to add San Diego to the itinerary, if you are so close to it ! Yeah ! That’s what we also did – A Road Trip : Phoenix – Los Angeles- San Diego. We had two days to cover two places – Los Angeles and San Diego.

Trip Advisor was surely a great help for us in shortlisting the places we must visit and places which can be skipped as of now. All of us have been recently to Orlando, Florida so we decide to skip on the most famous Universal Studio and Disneyland Adventure Park (If you have time, please make it there as well).

Day 1 – Los Angeles

We started early in the morning to cover all our attractions we had listed out. Almost all these attractions were in walking distance only. The first point was The Hollywood Walk of Fame which consists of five-pointed terrazzo and brass stars embedded in the sidewalks of a street with numerous restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops and other attractions on sides.

After walking around the street, clicking few pictures and sipping Starbucks we entered the famous Dolby Theater. This is the grand place which hosts the Oscars ! The feel of just getting into this grandeur was amazing. They provide a guided tour inside the theater to acquaint you with this lavish temple of Hollywood and narrate the history of Oscars. Unfortunately, no photography is allowed inside the theater, however they provide you with a postcard as a token of remembrance.

After this we decided to have our lunch in an Indian restaurant –Urban Masala and proceed further.

Now to Madame Tussauds ! Do I even need to tell anything..?? Just don’t try to forget your camera here.

After this we went to Ripley’s Believe It or Not! which deals in bizarre events and items so strange and unusual. There are many other such spots on the street which you can visit depending upon your time. After this, we drove to Beverly Hills where you can see California’s most opulent homes, hotels and personalities. Visitors flock to the Hills to experience the allure of Hollywood, world-class shopping, fine dining and of course star-gazing. The end point of the day was at Santa Monica Pier with the cool breeze of the sea and setting sun. You will find many restaurants, souvenir shops, street shows by local people.

DAY 2 – San Diego

Next day also we started as early as possible from Los Angeles to San Diego. It was around 2 hours drive and we reached La Jolla Beach directly. One of the most pristine beach in San Diego. You can go for any water sports you wish to, we did Kayaking or just lay on the sparkling silver sand. Keep your eyes open, sea lions will also be resting on the silver sand. We found one following us while Kayaking. For those who want some shopping time can go to Prospect Road (adjacent to La Jolla) which is a paradise for shopaholics. You find awesome restaurants, cafes, ice parlours, shops on the street. We went to Taste of Himalayas.

Then came the last and most exciting part of our trip – The Whale Watching. We had reserved our boat with Adventure RIB Rides and went for watching blue whales and dolphins. We were damn lucky and the captain was great. We saw 2 blue whales, 100’s of dolphins and sea lions ! This was the first time I was watching a real Blue Whale diving into the blue sea just 10-20 feet away from my boat! And the dolphins which I could have touched with my hands. It was magnificent.

Decorating Our First Home Together

Got married in December 2013 and then began the foremost task of decorating our first home together. We like the colour Blue and decided to have it as our theme as it brings tranquility after our all day busy schedule.  Here we started with our endless hunt for furniture, decor, electronics etc. which should match our style, budget, space and making unanimous decisions for each and everything. I say “unanimous decisions” because two of us had too many differences in choosing our items. For him certain things were cool but according to me those were outdated. I would like some stuff, he will hold me saying its out of our budget.

We visited each and every furniture and home decor shop in and around the locality to find exactly what we are looking for. With too many options around, it is very easy to get confused and be convinced with your decision. The next item we see, always looked better  than the before! The kick-start was exciting but trust me at some points it became daunting! After a lot of confusion, we finally reconciled on most of our stuff and were clear about each other’s taste and preferences. After the whole process, I say we now know each other better.  Oh then there were gifts for our new home, which we received on our Wedding which must be adjusted. Seriously we did not expect it to be so hard.

We almost got everything that we require in our new home to make it the most comfortable place on earth for us. But my craziness to add more or change a bit in the home will never go and shall not. Now when makemyhome is providing with such wonderful home decor items and at such a discounted price, any girl will get tempted and so am I.

So I think, I will pick-up these three things from makemyhome and give a small make-over to my love nest.

We already have lots of furniture in our home now but a blue painted wall behind the couch is still waiting for something to embrace it. This shiny silver colour round mirror completes the look. It gives a glamour to my living room within my budget and without eating away our moving space within the home.

This will be a new addition to my love of lamps and candles. The small flower petals will reflect the right amount of light to set the mood to enjoy an ideal evening with our loved ones or watch a late night movie. This is how a small thing can change so much !

This comfortable Football Bean Bag which is easy to carry and can fit anywhere will provide an easy and casual sitting space in our living room and goes perfectly well with my blue decor.

Breaking The Ice – Beyond Law

The internet has recently been swept up by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Is there a cause – social, political, cultural, or other – you passionately believe in ?

The believe stems from the days of my first Internship at CRY, New Delhi as a first year law student(2007). Being an Indian, I had always read and heard about the miseries an Indian girl or a woman has to go through each an every day but the internship experience made me believe that the wounds of an Indian women are much deeper!

We were a bunch of students from different educational background and were given a task to conduct a survey and make a report on “Female Foeticide”. Initially, I thought the idea of conducting the survey in South Delhi (one of the posh areas in India) is highly illogical as most of the people staying here are educated. They are aware of the fact that Female Foeticide is a crime. Why will anyone do so? Why will the elite class indulge in this heinous crime? My thinking was, dowry system is the reason of why people go for Female Foeticide. The rich ones, even if they pay dowry (which is again illegal), can afford it. Why would they kill !!

The survey began and we met people in and around South Delhi posh colonies, the villages around, doctors, ministers and whoever possible related to the issue. With each passing day the urge to shout and say “STOP” grew stronger and stronger. My basics were wrong, the truth was that I had never expected.

Doctors, one of the most noble professions, were committing the crime and instigating people to kill the female inside the womb to extract money. Life saver was playing the role of Life taker. The reason for committing the crime by different families were numerous and varied from different class of people depending upon their monetary status. The lower income group people thought – the male child will help in earning income for the family and hence family needs will be taken care, if they marry their son then they will get dowry whereas for a girl they have to pay. The middle income group people thought – we cannot afford more than two children, why to have a girl then and the high income group thought – only a boy can run the family name, pride and property. There were many reasons given by the families as to why they should not have a girl child in the family.

The rate of female foeticide (in this region) was more among the higher and the middle income group who are highly educated and qualified. I was dumbstruck! What education has done to our country ? I would have never believed that education can kill someone. While speaking to few women whose child were killed in their wombs, they told us that many of them did not even realise that their child has been killed by some family members by giving some home tonics and food under the sham of something good. Few of them were beaten to death for bearing a female child and forced to undergo an abortion. Someone’s husband married another women and divorced her because she only conceives a girl child.

These were just few narrations that I illustrated here, there were more. The plight of those women is difficult to be described in words. How can someone kill an unborn or the emotional trauma the mother would have undergone or how the Doctor can do this are hard to imagine. I doubt only law and education can tame such minds. Much more is required but I wonder what ?

This was the story of that region which appeared so much brighter to me before. As a law student I could not do much for those who shared their miseries with me. We tried to tell people about their rights and responsibilities and submitted our report to CRY.  Being a girl, I feel and take pride in every opportunity to tell people how important a girl or woman is. World will never be so great without her. Value her.

Don’t Blame God for Wrong Insurance Policy !

Law Succour

acts of god

Image from here.

Do you actually read before you sign any legal document specially your insurance policies? Those of you who actually do must have come across a phrase “ACTS OF GOD“.

You will wonder why the phrase gains so much importance in a legal document. If we tell you in simple terms, it is a WARNING before you sign your insurance policy.

ACTS OF GOD means any act or circumstance due to the act which it is beyond the control of human being. It include wars, riots, fire, earthquake, tsunami, flood, hurricane, volcano etc. The other legal phrases which are used in place of Acts of God are Inevitable Accidents, Natural Calamity, Acts of Nature.

Now why this gains so much importance in insurance policies !

Most of the time insurance policies exclude the damage occurred due to Acts of God. So, if your insurance policy does not…

Thanks PRAN !!

Our generation will always remember the man “jiska dimag computer se bhi tej chalta hai“. RIP Pran.

Recently, I have been to San Diego which held the Comic Con 2014. People were dressed in the attire of their favorite cartoon characters and super heroes. It was amazing to see them all. But imagine, if we could give it a desi touch and have a comic con in our own style! We will see so many Chacha Chaudhary(s), Sabu(s), Rocket(s), Pinki(s), Billu(s) …. n so on. For me even the thought of having something like this is amazing. Its like re-living your childhood.

I am not a fiction loving person but was always an avid reader of Chacha Chaudhary comics. As a kid, I always knew that Chacha Chaudhary will set things right at the end. This frail old Indian man in a red turban, a wooden stick, a waistcoat with a pocket watch,  dominated most of our childhood times. On this day, when Pran left us with his immortal cartoon characters, there are several things we can learn from our loved Chacha :

  1. Common Sense can solve most of our problems. You don’t need 6 pack abs or a super power.
  2. Seek the advice from your elders, they know how to deal it better.
  3. Enjoy everything that you do.
  4. Be friends to all , even men from other worlds (Sabu)!
  5. Realization of crime is better than punishment without any repentance.
  6. Truth always triumps.
  7. Have love and care for animals. (Rocket was an adopted street dog)
  8. Above all, Chacha was always afraid of Chachi but knew how to handle her!! Wife is the boss. 😉

Let’s not let the values of Chacha Chaudhary die and pay a tribute to the Great Indian Cartoonist “PRAN” .
